Hang Dong, Chiang Mai: what to do on the south side of the city

A practical guide to Hang Dong, south Chiang Mai: gardens, a teak temple, a quarry lake, craft markets and where families can spend a shaded afternoon.

Mini Golf CNX · 16 September 2026

Hang Dong is where Chiang Mai stretches out. The Old City is a grid of moats and temples; the south side is rice fields, walled villas, farm shops and long straight roads with a mountain at the end of them. If you live here, or you are staying in a villa south of the airport, this is what is worth your time.

What is there to do in Hang Dong?

Short answer

The best of Hang Dong is outdoors and spread out. Royal Park Rajapruek on the road south is the big formal garden. Wat Ton Kwen is a small teak temple that photographs beautifully at golden hour. Baan Tawai is the handicraft village for furniture and carving. Grand Canyon Water Park is a flooded quarry with inflatables. In between sit the cafés, farm shops and family venues that serve the expat community living here.

Royal Park Rajapruek is the anchor. It is a large landscaped park with themed gardens and a Lanna-style pavilion at the centre, and it is open every day from 08:00 to 18:00 according to the park's own site. Go early. The gardens are wide open to the sun and the shade runs out by late morning.

Wat Ton Kwen is the opposite scale: a quiet wooden temple with a covered walkway and mango trees, the kind of place you visit for twenty minutes and remember for years. Baan Tawai is a working village of workshops and showrooms, worth a slow wander if you are furnishing a house or just like the smell of fresh-cut teak.

Where can kids burn off energy on the south side?

Short answer

Hang Dong has more open ground than the city centre, so it does well for children who need to move. The quarry lake at Grand Canyon Water Park suits confident swimmers and older kids. For a slower afternoon with the whole family, an 18-hole round of garden mini golf is a solid choice: everyone plays, and it fills a comfortable 1 to 2 hours.

The water park is the loudest option. The quarry cliffs are dramatic, the inflatables are enormous, and it earns a full afternoon on a hot day. Check the age and swimming rules before you go, because they matter here more than at a normal pool.

If the whole family wants something calmer, Mini Golf CNX is an 18-hole course laid out through a garden in Chiang Mai, with shaded garden seating and cold drinks, snacks and ice cream on site. There is no booking, you walk in any day between 09:00 and 18:00. Younger children can play cornhole or frisbee on the lawn while older siblings finish their round. Directions are on the visit page, and there is a walkthrough of the course if you want to know what to expect.

Is Hang Dong any good in the hot season or the rains?

Short answer

It works in both, with adjustments. In the hottest weeks of the year the south side's open fields hold the heat, so gardens and lawns belong to the early morning and the last two hours before sunset. In the rainy months the storms usually arrive in the late afternoon and pass quickly, which leaves the mornings clear and the evenings cool and washed.

The trick is to give the middle of the day to shade or air conditioning. Kad Farang Village and the shops around it cover the indoor part; a garden venue with proper shade covers the outdoor part. Mini golf in the shade is a different game from mini golf in full sun, so on a hot day go before eleven or after three.

Rain is less of a problem than most visitors expect. A shower on a garden course means twenty minutes in the shaded seating with an ice cream. We wrote a fuller plan for rainy days and the hot season if you want the detail.

Golden hour on the south side

The best light in Hang Dong is the last hour before sunset, when the mountain goes purple and the rice fields turn gold. Plan the outdoor stop for then and the indoor stop for the afternoon.

How do I plan a half day in Hang Dong?

Short answer

Start early at Royal Park Rajapruek or Wat Ton Kwen while the air is cool. Take a long lunch somewhere with fans or air conditioning, then pick one outdoor activity for the late afternoon: the quarry lake for a swim, or a round of garden mini golf for the whole family. Finish with the sunset view over the fields. Two stops and a meal is a good day; four stops is a tired one.

Distances on the south side are longer than they look on the map, and the main road gets busy at school pick-up time. Give each stop a proper slot. If you are coming with a group or planning a birthday, message the venue ahead so space is set aside, then let the lawn games and the shaded seating do the rest.

Common questions

What is Hang Dong known for?+
Hang Dong is the district directly south of Chiang Mai city. It is known for the Baan Tawai handicraft village, the teak temple Wat Ton Kwen, the flooded quarry at Grand Canyon Water Park and the large gardens at Royal Park Rajapruek. Many expat families live here for the space and the quieter lanes, so cafés, farm shops and family venues have followed them.
Is Hang Dong worth visiting with kids?+
Yes, if you plan around the heat. The south side has more open ground than the Old City, with gardens, lawns and outdoor play spaces. Aim for the morning or the last two hours before sunset, keep the middle of the day for shade, cold drinks or somewhere indoors, and give each activity its own slot so nobody is rushed between stops.
