Chiang Mai malls with kids, and outdoor breaks when you need air

Which Chiang Mai malls suit kids, how to plan a mall day without burnout, and calm outdoor garden breaks for when the family needs fresh air.

Mini Golf CNX · 24 October 2026

Malls are the default family plan in Chiang Mai for good reason: cool air, clean toilets, food on every floor. The trouble starts around the third hour, when the kids are glassy-eyed and the adults are circling the same food court.

Which Chiang Mai malls work best for kids?

Short answer

The three most families head for are MAYA on the Nimman side of town, Central Festival on the eastern edge of the city and Central Chiang Mai Airport near the airport. The larger malls tend to have cinemas, food courts and play areas for children. Pick by where you are staying, then check the mall's own site for current kids' zones, since tenants change often.

MAYA is handy if you are based around Nimman and want a mall you can pair with cafés afterwards. Central Festival suits a long rainy afternoon, when you want everything under one roof. Central Chiang Mai Airport is an easy fit for the first or last day of a trip, especially if you are already heading that way. Our last day before your flight guide has more on planning around a departure.

Whichever mall you choose, look at the floor directory when you arrive. Find the kids' attractions first, then work your way to the food.

How do you stop a mall day wearing everyone out?

Short answer

Cap the mall at a morning or an afternoon, and plan the next stop before you arrive. Children wilt under bright lights and constant noise much faster than adults expect. Eat early, before the lunch rush fills the food court. Then leave while everyone is still in a good mood, ideally for somewhere with grass, shade and space to run.

Mall fatigue is mostly sensory. Every shopfront plays music, every corridor looks the same, and kids have nowhere to burn off energy except the escalators. A short block works much better than a long one: see the film, play in the soft area, eat, and go.

Give children one clear thing to look forward to afterwards. "We're going outside to play" makes leaving much easier than "we're going back to the hotel".

What outdoor breaks suit kids in Chiang Mai?

Short answer

Look for places with shade, somewhere to sit and something for children to do with their hands. Parks, animal farms and garden venues all fit. A garden mini golf course works well because each hole is a short burst of play, adults can join in without effort, and there are cold drinks nearby when the heat builds.

Chiang Mai has plenty of green space once you step away from the shopping strips. Animal farms are a favourite with younger children, and our round-up of animal farms for kids covers the options. For families watching the budget, the cheap things to do with kids list has more ideas.

Mini golf sits nicely in the middle. Toddlers can push a ball along, older children get properly competitive, and grandparents can play at their own pace. At Mini Golf CNX the 18-hole garden course has shaded seating, ice cream and lawn games such as cornhole, board games and frisbee for anyone who wants a break between holes.

When should you swap the mall for the garden?

Short answer

Use the mall for the hottest stretch of the day and save the garden for later. A cool morning or the softer light of late afternoon is the most comfortable time to be outside with children. Mini Golf CNX is open every day from 09:00 to 18:00, so a late afternoon round can finish in time for an easy dinner.

The swap works in either direction. On a rainy day, start outside if the morning is dry and retreat to the mall when the clouds roll in. On a clear day, let the mall absorb the midday heat and head outdoors once the sun drops. For typical temperatures by month and hour, see WeatherSpark's Chiang Mai climate averages.

A round takes about 1 to 2 hours, so it slots between lunch and dinner without stretching anyone's patience.

How do you plan a mixed mall and garden day?

Short answer

Pair one indoor block with one outdoor block, and keep the travel between them simple. A mall morning with a film and an early lunch, then an afternoon round of mini golf with ice cream, gives children variety without exhaustion. Check opening hours for both stops before you leave, and keep the evening light.

A simple shape works for most families: indoors while it is hot, outdoors once it cools, then a relaxed dinner. If you are in town for several days, the four-day family itinerary shows how to spread mall days, markets and outdoor stops across a trip so no single day carries too much.

Common questions

What are the best malls in Chiang Mai for kids?+
The big names are MAYA on the Nimman side of town, Central Festival on the eastern edge of the city and Central Chiang Mai Airport near the airport. The larger malls tend to have cinemas, food courts and play areas for children, so they suit a hot afternoon or a rainy spell. Before you go, check each mall's own website for current kids' zones and opening hours, because tenants change.
What can kids do outdoors in Chiang Mai instead of a mall?+
Good options include parks, animal farms and garden venues where children can move around freely. Mini Golf CNX is one of them: an 18-hole garden mini golf course with shaded seating, lawn games such as cornhole and frisbee, and cold drinks, snacks and ice cream on site. A round takes about 1 to 2 hours, which fits neatly between other plans.
Do I need to book Mini Golf CNX for a family visit?+
No booking is needed for a normal family visit. Mini Golf CNX is walk in and open every day from 09:00 to 18:00. If you are coming as a larger group or planning a birthday or event, message ahead so space can be set aside for you. Details on finding the course are on the visit page.
How long does a round of mini golf take with children?+
A round of 18 holes at Mini Golf CNX takes about 1 to 2 hours. Children who play quickly tend to finish nearer the shorter end, and families who stop for ice cream or a game of cornhole between holes stretch towards the longer end. It works well as a half-day anchor or as a short break from a mall day.
